Magnets for meteorite's ???

TC-NM

Active member
I would like to attach a magnet to my digging tool for recovering meteorite's. My question is, can I use any type or shape of magnet(s)? I have a round, cylindrical shape magnet about 7/8" tall by 1 1/4" in diameter that came out of a old speaker, will that work or do you guys use a special "Rare Earth" type of magnet? Does it make a difference? I don't think so. . . What are your thoughts/opinions?

Thanks,

TC-NM

The rare earth magnets are much, much better. Small speaker magnets are not very powerful and would not lift a very big meteorite.

I fooled around with this too. My finding was the rare earth magnets I got from E-bay were too darn'd good. I first got some that were 1" X 1" X .5" and J.B. Quick welded one on my digger. It turned out to be a nuisance and downright dangerous. The digger would grab onto anything ferrous it came close to. Next I ordered some about half that size. Same problem. I wound up using an older, but larger Hard-drive magnet. You can find 'em inside all harddrives. They are half moon shaped, flat and work well on most diggers. I am going to take one of my 1" X .5" X .5" inchers and glue it to a collapsible blind-man "feeler" stick for serious meteor hunting although I believe the "digger with H.D. magnet would be adequate for most all around hunting. Good luck, please post what works well for you.

Thanks to all for giving your information. I'll be working on this project the next few weeks.

Go to Joann Fabrics or Pat Cattans and they have rare earth magnets that are coated with something shiny like nickle. They don't say "rare earth" on them but trust me they are. I use them for RC plane builds to do things like hold on battery covers and they are as strong as it gets. Much stronger than any other magnet I've laid my hands on around here.

they are now called NEODYMIUM (Nd2Fe14B) rare earth magnets, look it up on ebay, they are dead cheap and the strongest you can get, don't be fooled by thier size, the bigger ones are strong to a point of being dangerous, a 3" round magnet similar to the old ones we used to take from speakers will lift 350lb

Yep, Kered. And if you get your finger between one of thows and an old engine block , it'll SQUASH with 350 lbs! OUCH! :yikes: BEWARE of those magnets. There's nothing like a nice squashed, throbbing, finger to make you metal detecting day.......

I've done some searching and cant seem to come up with anything. Just ordered my first detector (Garrett ace 250). I have a few very powerful rare earth magnets, do i need to keep them away from the detector? will it hurt it or cause it not to work properly? Thanks for your help.

OK here you go.

If you have ever changed out your hard drive of your computer,or you could go to a PC repair shop and they will most likely give you all that you want. Each hard drive has between 2 and 4 rare earth magnets in them.I guess that's what they are,I have a level with true earth magnets in it.Any way pull it apart and take them out, they are so strong that when placed on the fridge i have to use a butter knife under the mounting edge to pry it off give it try and see how it works. They are about 2 inches long and 3/4 of inch wide and 1/4 inch thick do not let the size bother you as they are super strong and they have 2 screws that hod them in the hard drive

Try this for magnets. I use these to fish around docks in Lake Erie.....15 bucks.....paid for itself and then some the first time I used it.

TC,

First not all meterites are magnetic & then some only slightly. (so a super magnet is nisicary for those & smaller) - - Shape does'nt matter - - Remember rusted steel or corroded objects can be difficult to find in the dirt so super magnets speed recovery of targets detected with your metal detector, so you can be more productive with your time.

Also an issue of attaching a magnet to a pick or tool is to provide a skirt to hold the super magnet inplace when digging, otherwise it slides when jared & will come off.

Some people use a walking stick with a super magnet to recover magnetic meteorites on the surface of the ground, like in Gold Basin, AZ area.

The 1.5 X 1.5 X 1/2 super magnet on my pick is so strong it will pull trash steel trash out of the ground I'm digging in (prospecting) + it will attach itself extremely fast to any magnetic object. Hard drive magnets will work or get a magnet with a hole in the center to attach it to a wood handle (secures it better & easier).

caretaker,

A magnet is just another metalic object to a metal detector, basicly another target. No, it will not damage your metal detector being around them.

Keep them rare earth magnets AWAY from your billfold. It will wreck havoc on your credit cards and wipe them out

i drilled a hole in the wood handle on my spade and put about an inch of some of those neodymium magnets in. i also put a magnet from out of a broken hard drive on to the end of a old golf stick. that's a really strong magnet, pick a coin up of the ground with it and it's hard to get off.
heres some pics and a short vid.
